Middletown South the past two years, has been a team with lots of young talent, that have entered the school. The South faithful are waiting for these talented players to take off. They all at one point have shown flashes. Many of the Middletown South babies are on the college coaches radar. The coaches are waiting and watching to see if they take the next step. This summer it seems many of the Middletown South, players were getting in the gym more. This could be a breakout year for the talented group. But there is one player on the South team that college coaches are targeting most these days. It’s a player that has gone from un-discovered, she didn’t enter Middletown South as one of those players, people thought would be highly recruited..But right now Madison Szabo, just might be the most in demand player one the South roster. The question is how did this all happen?
Madison Szabo, is 6’3″ with a college ready body right now as a junior. That is enough to impress any college coach. But just being tall and having a great body is not enough these day. Having a work ethic and real dedication is what it takes these days, to make a name for yourself. Madison Szabo has done just that in recent months. So much that even ACC schools have expressed a interest in her. A Top 25 school has called about her. The reason for all this is simple. Szabo has decided that she whats to be special and has decided, to out work everyone these days.
It was last spring when, Mike Rice was running his un-stopple’s post player class that I discovered Madison Szabo. I had zero idea she played for Tom Brennan at Middletown South. Like everyone else I was impressed with her size. But I thought to myself, where has she been the last few years. How serious could she be about the game. But after watching her play, I thought maybe she could develop if she became a gym. Now that is easier said that done. Everyone wants to be a gym rat, but becoming one is a entire different story. Plus nobody was calling the Middletown South team gym rats,so I was very suspect about Madison. But Madison Szabo made it a believer, as she seemed to show up to everything.

When I saw Madison Szabo, at camp this summer it opened my eyes. Many times when at player enters their junior and senior year, they don’t want to attend camps. They don’t want to spend hours in a gym in the summer. Then their is a little thing called ego, but in the case of Madison Szabo, it was all about getting better. It was clear she was ego free and only wanted to get better. She worked herself to the bone at camp. She also did something that surprised me. She played hard on almost every trip down the floor. I started to believe this young lady could be a D1 player. Her improvement curve was off the the charts.
It was sometime in August that the phone calls started. First a call from a ACC school shocked me. Then a call from a team that finished in the sweet 16. It became clear to me Madison Szabo, was now on the radar. When she visited an ACC school it shocked me. But it shouldn’t have..because her work ethic was special. She runs the floor and is willing to do the dirty work. It was strange seeing all this from a kid who got little time her first two years of high school. Middletown South 2019 and 2020 babies were the star of the team. It was these players everyone expected coaches to be begging for their services. But its Madison Szabo who is now the drawing card. It is she that is the honey to the bee’s. It is she that has established a reputation as a gym rat and tireless worker. It is she that right now that has a bright future and remember…she is only a junior. Tom Brennan has done it again.
Middletown South has a track record of developing players. Many schools get ready made D1 players. But Tom Brennan has had to develop his talent. His best player is a future high major guard. His daughter Isla, but that getting this type of player has been rare in Middletown South history. It’s players like Stephanie Mayerhoffer and Kayla Richardson is how South has made its reputation. It’s these type kids who arrive at Middletown South, and develop into D1 players. There is no question Madison Szabo, will join a long list of players who walk into Middletown South and leave as D1 players. It’s a Middletown South tradition that she will continue. She will be for Mary Beth Chambers Jersey Shore Elite this spring and we all knows what that means…DEVELOPMENT.
MADISON SZABO is moving closer everyday to becoming one of the best post players Middletown South has had in years. This season, she could be the difference in there season. She has proven hard work, and desire can lead to great things….and soon she will be a household name…
