GIANNA SANO: IS ST. JOHN VIANNEY’S JUNIOR GUARD A P4 PLAYER?”

There are players you watch and wonder if they can play at the next level. Then there are players you watch and start asking a completely different question: How high can they go? St. John Vianney junior guard Gianna Sano belongs in that second category.

SO IS GIANNA SANO A P4 PLAYER?

In my opinion, without question.

I have coached more than my share of Power Four players over the years, and I know what those players look like. I know what separates a good high school player from someone who can step onto a P4 campus and actually impact a program. Gianna Sano has those qualities.

PHILLY RISE PUT HER ON DISPLAY

Sano was sensational this summer playing for Philly Rise U16, and the experience did something important for her recruiting profile:

It established her as one of the best guards on the tour.

She wasn’t simply a player filling a role. She showed that she could make plays, defend, score and lead against high-level competition. That’s important because P4 basketball isn’t about being able to do one thing really well. You have to be versatile. And versatility may be Sano’s greatest weapon.

SHE CAN DO EVERYTHING

Gianna Sano is one of the most versatile guards in New Jersey. She can be an elite facilitator. She can score. She can lead. And she can change a game defensively. She doesn’t need the ball in her hands every possession to affect winning. But when the ball is in her hands, she has the ability to create something. That’s what makes her dangerous.

THE FRESHMAN YEAR SHE MISSED MAY HAVE CHANGED EVERYTHING

Sano missed her freshman season. Since then, it seems like her game has exploded. Remember she gets elite coaching everyday as her Coach is DAWN KARPELL one of the most successful coaches in the country boys or girls. She also is in one the most competitive environments in the country. Actually, it feels like she’s getting better almost daily.

There is a noticeable progression in her game. The confidence is growing. The physical tools are becoming more evident. Her understanding of how to control a game continues to develop. And that’s the scary part for opposing teams and college coaches: She’s not finished. A player already performing at this level who continues to improve can become something special.

WHAT DOES A P4 GUARD LOOK LIKE?

Let’s make it simple.

P4 guards have to be able to score, defend and dominate.

They have to shoot the basketball with range and consistency.

They have to be able to handle pressure.

They have to make decisions.

They have to compete.

And they have to defend.

Because let’s be honest: If you can’t defend, you can’t play at the P4 level. Sano can defend. Her quickness and anticipation make her an excellent perimeter defender. She sees things developing. She has the athletic ability to recover. And she genuinely enjoys competing on that end of the floor. That’s a major part of her P4 argument.

THE ATHLETICISM IS REAL

P4 guards are athletic.

Gianna Sano may be one of the most athletic point guards in the state. Her quickness is obvious. But her leaping ability is what can really catch you off guard. There are moments when she gets off the floor and you almost have to do a double take. It’s shocking because opponents don’t always expect that kind of explosiveness from her. That athleticism gives her another dimension as a scorer, defender and playmaker.

AND THEN THERE’S THE WORK ETHIC

This may be the part I like most.

There aren’t many kids who genuinely love basketball more than Gianna Sano. She is one of those players who would probably play basketball for a bag of peanuts. And I’m not joking. She’s that kid. She’s the player you can envision still playing the game decades from now. Put her in a women’s over-50 league one day and she’ll probably be there early, stretching and asking when warmups start. She just loves basketball. That matters. Talent gets you noticed. Athleticism gets you recruited. But loving the game and being willing to work at it is what allows players to maximize everything they have.

MY VERDICT

I’ve coached enough P4 players to recognize what P4 ability looks like. And when I watch Gianna Sano, I don’t see a player who needs to convince me she might be good enough. I see a player who can play at that level. And not just play. Be successful.

She has the scoring ability.

She has the shooting range.

She has the athleticism.

She has the defensive instincts.

She has the versatility.

She has the leadership qualities.

And most importantly, she has the work ethic and love for the game.

So when college coaches ask me: “Is Gianna Sano a P4 player?” My answer is simple: YES. Now the question isn’t whether she can play at that level.

The real question is how far she can take her game once she gets there.
