Today’s PREVIEW is COASTAL “A” DIVISION. This the best division in girls basketball in the state of New Jersey. This Division is the home of the current Shore Conference Champion, SJV. It is the home of State Non Public A Champion, RBC. This is the division where the biggest giant killer of all time, John Truhan and RBR reside. This the home of a historic program in Rumson Fair Heaven. This is a division that has 24 Division One players, including Holmdel’s Mackenzie Teevan. This is the division that has the most impactful star freshman class. If all this is not an enough, the division can roll out a lineup coaches like no other division in the state. That’s because Tom Brennan of Middletown North is one of the all time greats. Dave Callahan is dangerous every year and a master at getting his teams to play above the level of their ability. Joe Montano of RBC, Dawn Karpell of SJV and John Turhan of Red Bank Reg, have all won SCT titles.
The early favorite for Coastal “A” has to be Red Bank Catholic based on their state championship and a win over SJV along the win. They return their entire roster and are not only deep but they have shooters, ball handlers, rebounders with size, quickness and experience now. Many have been waiting for a team explosion of this unit but it has not happened. The players are as tight as it gets and everyone is willing to play their role. Every single player that walks on the floor currently has a D1 offer on the table or has signed with the exception of two. This team lives and dies with their defense, they are the best defensive team in all of New Jersey. Coach Joe Montano has won everything possible in his time at RBC. He is the winningest Coach in Shore History and the 2nd winningest coach of All Time in the state of New Jersey. This RBC group that has been around the block. They have the prefect blend of Jr and Sr’s and they all are next level passers. RBC is the best passing team in the state. They will need it because their schedule is insane in every way. They play just about every powerhouse team on the east coast. Throw stats out the window when it comes to RBC, winning is the objective and nobody stat pads or cares about numbers.
Coach Joe Montano-(600 wins, winningest coach in Shore History, Multi SCT,STATE and Division Championships)
2023-24 Record
Overall–26-5
Conference – 5-0 in B NORTH
Projected Division one players (9)
P5 Players-(1)
Gym Rat Count (7)
ADDY NYEMCHEK- JUNIOR- SWING
She is one of the best players ever to wear a RBC uniform. She is one of the most unselfish players in the state. It could be the reason why she is the best passer in Shore Conference history. She is one the few superstars that does the intangibles. She dives on the floor for loose balls, rebounds on both ends of the floor, has elite shot selection, sets screens and runs in transition on defense and offense. She is an elite shot blocker and one of the best defenders in the state. She can guard all 5 spots on the floor. More importantly the 6’1″ Nyemchek, has gotten bigger and stronger. She is maturing physically, very bad news for the Shore Conference and the state of New Jersey. Last season she averaged 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. She will score her 1000th point this year as junior. But unlike other kids, she will not make it a priority. She is one of the best players in the country and a leading candidate for PLAYER OF THE YEAR in the State of New Jersey and the Shore Conference. She is the most recruited player in the state of New Jersey. She has multiple P5 offers and Ivy Leagues offers as well. By the time she is done, she will be on the Mt. Rushmore of RBC basketball.
CHRISTINA LIGGO- SENIOR- COMBO
She shocked the recruiting world last spring by committing to the US NAVY ACADEMY. She could be the most consistence player I have seen since last April. That’s because she has been remarkable in her focus. She is the ultimate gym rat and has added something to her game each year in high school. She has made a reputation for playing lights out in big games. She seems to save her best for the bright lights. First she saved RBC’s season last year against Ewing with a stellar performance in leading a RBC comeback. Then against SJV she was simply sensational on both sides of the ball and made the three point shot that sent SJV packing in state semi final. She averaged 9 point..3 rebounds and 2 assists. She is a complete player. She is a former FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR. Christina is this years Team Captain along with Tessa Carman. She is certainly on the Shore Conference Player of the Year short list. She wants the only thing missing from her resume a SCT ring before leaving RBC
TESSA CARMAN-SENIOR- FORWARD
Nobody in the Shore Conference has her physical presence. She is a rebounding machine and the best shot blocker in the state. Her ability to score at all three levels make her a nightmare matchup. She is a dynamic passer and when she is locked in, nobody is better. We saw some long extended show stopping performances from her this summer. Not good news for Shore rivals or other teams in the state. Like her teammate, she shocked everyone by becoming the first blue chip recruit from the Shore Conference to stay home. She committed to MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY. Last season, she averaged 9 points… a team leading 7 rebounds and 2 assists. She will want a SCT and another STATE Championship in her swan song season.
KATIE LIGGIO- JUNIOR- SHOOTING GUARD
One of the best Shooters on the East Coast. She has more range that any player in the state of New Jersey. But it’s her ability score off the bounce and her mid range game that makes her so very special. She has emerged as a sold defender, all praise to Coach Joe Montano. She gets out and run the floor in transition. Nobody draws more attention and stretches a defense the way she does. Last season her performances down the stretch were historic in a lot of way, especially her show stopping game in the championship against Pope John, when she had 6 three’s and 20 points. Katie averaged just under 10 points a game last season and had 65 three point shoots. Liggio, is a gym rat and has multiple D1 offers.
TESSA LIGGIO -JUNIOR- POINT GUARD
She is the heart beat of the RBC team. She is the best TRUE POINT in the Shore Conference by a country mile. She has played against every type point guard and defensive game planning possible and she still is productive. She is a deadly shooter to 25 feet and can finish at the rim going either direction. She is shifty and smart. She is the ultimate leader. She is also as mentally tough as them come. Teams simply can not shake her. She is one of the most confident point guard these eyes has seen in recent year. She eats up pressure and elevates her teammates. Last season, she averaged 6 points..4 rebounds and 4 assists. Make no mistake RBC can lose any player on this roster and still be one of the favorites in the state. But this is the one player they cannot replace.
LOLA GIORDANO- JUNIOR- COMBO
She may be the best defensive guard on the team. She is a total warrior and leader. The future D1 guard who starts for every other school in the state except the one she on. But it’s not important because she plays starter mins. She has willed herself into an excellent three point shooter and gets to the rim for buckets or drops dimes to the RBC frontline. She is not just quick, strong and physical but now totally battle tested. She looks like she is gearing up for a big season. She has made her mark the last 2 years and is a proven talent. She is a very versatile guard and has the respect of all. She averaged 5 point… 3 rebounds ..3 assist and had 57 steals last year.
DANIELA MALETSKY- JUNIOR- WING
This is really not fair, she would be a star for just about every other team in the state. She averaged 5 points..4 rebounds and her 60 steals and 10 block shots were from the wing position. She is one the toughness players in the state to guard off the dribble. Her stand still three point jumper is highly effective. She is a true defensive game changer. On multiple occasions last season, she either keep RBC in games or helped them extend a lead with her defense turning into offense. She long, strong quick and brings an energy driven attitude. She causes all type of trouble with her dribble drive play making skills. She may have dropped the most important dime of the season when she hit Christina Liggio for a big three point shot vs SJV in the state semi final game. Daniella Maletsky, does the winning stuff!
SOPHIA SMITH- JUNIOR- FORWARD
The 6’2″ forward is expecting to have a big year. She spent most of the fall weekends visiting a number of D1 schools that offered her. That’s because she coming into her own these days. Last year, she hit without a doubt the biggest shot in recent RBC history. It was her three point shot and then her steal immediately after that led to Christina Liggio’s three , that broke the back of SJV. She has become one of the best post defenders and shot blockers in the Shore Conference. She has an excellent 3 pointer and now is much stronger even than a year ago. She had big moments all season last year coming off the bench. She too also starts for just about every other team in the state. Last season, she averages 5 points, and 2 rebounds a game. She had a number of double figure scoring games. She could have a monster season
SCARLET LeVAKE – JUNIOR- FORWARD
The 6’1″ forward is going to bring a physical presence. It will take her time to learn the RBC system. But she is big and strong and highly competitive. She is an excellent post defender and runs the floor on both sides of the ball. She can rebound in traffic and score on the block. She has a chance to make a major impact in time. It all depends on how quickly she melts in the RBC program and finds a role. She is another D1 player on the roster.
RAQUELLE McMULLIN – SENIOR- SWING
She gives RBC has deeper bench and a player that has played in highly competitive basketball environments. In a pinch Coach Montano will not be afraid to go to her. She is long and is a nightmare on the ball in pressing defenses. She can knock down open jumpers to 18 feet. She also rebounds bigger than her 5’9″ frame. She is the perfect teammates and will not fold if called on in a big spot. She seems to always be ready to play
ADDY STRUM- SOPHOMORE- SWING
She has improved in a big way this summer and it then carried over into the fall. She showed real flashes at times in the Hoop Group fall varsity league. Look for her to swing between Varsity and JV so that she can continue her development.
THERE ARE NO FRESHMAN OF IMPACT
They will share the ball, as they are the best passing and shooting team perhaps in the state. Addy Nyemchek, was their leading scorer and the only double figure scorer on the team. A very misleading stat, because this team took turns having a different player carry the offense almost each night. RBC is going to use full court pressure to wear teams down with their legit rotation of 9 players. Look for their half court defense to once again be the best in the state. They will run on makes and misses and every single player is a three point shooting threat.
There are questions and they are real. Like off the court, almost everyone on this roster is being recruited. But is there focus on basketball or recruiting? Joe Montano, has done a magical job of some how keeping all this talent happy and more importantly playing for each other. Another question will be are the players now taking playing time for granted? Are they pushing each other in practices ? Now are Juniors satisfied or do they want more? Finally can they win a SCT, they did not make it to the finals last season.
Coach Dawn Karpell once again proved she is still the Queen of the Castle called the Shore Conference. Last year SJV made it 5 straight SCT titles, when they defeated Manasquan in the Championship game. Her team had a number of transfers struggle to adjust to SJV’s style of play. But slowly as the year moved forward, they got on board and SJV began to cook during the later part of the season. Last year her team was inexperienced, with the exception of Madison Kocis, nobody had played major mins in a SJV uniform. Now a year later this is a seasoned team where most of the players in the rotation have played impactful mins in big games. This team has elite size, are battle tested players. They have scorers and are competitive. Stellar Lockhart was there only double figure scorer. But again this team has scorers everywhere. They also have something that is alway in demand. They have HIGH IQ PLAYERS. Almost every player on the SJV roster has shown improvement. They freshman from a year ago have made serious improvements. Their incoming freshman will certainly challenge the upper-classmen. SJV has to be sore about how they lost in the state tournament last year. They will want revenge and the way they can get that is by winning the state title. Which they have not won in two years. Coach Karpell, would love to start another streak this season
Head Coach Dawn Karpell (Multiple State, Divisional and SCT titles, National Ranking, Coach of Year )

Projected D1 players – (7)
Power 5 players (2)
Gym Rats– (4)
JULIA KARPELL is currently at Fairfield U. She was 1st team All Shore and the team leader and big shot maker last year.
Danielle Matus transferred to Morris Catholic. She was the teams most creative offensive player. She started every game and averaged 9 points a game
Two years ago she was First Team All Freshman. Many believe she deserved to be Freshman of the Year, especially after her historic game vs RBC in the SCT final. She was sensational in scoring 18 points. Last year while she didn’t put up be massive numbers she was highly efficient. She had 280 points, 120 rebounds and 56 assists. More importantly, she did all the taking good shots and at times sacrificing her game for the team. It went totally unnoticed her performances in the state tournament where once again she was one of the most efficient players in the tournament. Since the month of August she just may be one of the 5 best players in the state of New Jersey. Her emergence has been mind blowing. She been frankly super human. They gym rat, has gotten physically stronger. The hook that she started using last year is a signature move, that is unstoppable. She has shooting range to 28 ft and just may be the best post up guard in all of New Jersey. She is being heavily recruited and that was before her transformation and added her lock down defense and magical passing skills. Madison Kocis is one of the leading candidates for PLAYER OF THE YEAR in the State of New Jersey. She has never received the lions share of the hype from media, bloggers and the so called shot callers. But right now it’s going to really hard not to acknowledge her greatness. Do not be shocked to see her numbers not just improve even more but rather take a massive jump. She is highly competitive and will want a state title this year. SHE IS THE REAL DEAL!
ALEENA DINKER- SENIOR- POINT GUARD
She has been around and seen it all. Nobody on the SJV roster has seen more winning than Aleena Dinker. She knows what it takes to win big games. She is lighting quick and can score at the rim of shoot the three. She is as good of a defender as you will find in the division. Her quickness, head up leads and passing vision make her problem in transition. Look for Dinker to be the leader of this team on the court.
BROOKLYN TAYLOR- SENIOR- GUARD
She could have a breakout season after an outstanding summer. Brooklyn is a handful for anyone. She is murder off the bounce and can over power guards. She can knock down the three and is great at pushing the ball and getting to the rim or setting up teammates. She will play a major role for SJV this season both on offense and defense. She could be in the starting lineup or come off the bench. It won’t matter because she has played enough mins to feel comfortable in either role. She had over a 100 points last season and over 50 assists. She signed with St. Micheals’s in November
TAYLOR SOFILKANICH- JUNIOR- FORWARD
The 6’4″ athletic post player, just may be the toughest matchup has in the Shore Conference. She is being recruited by National programs. She gained a ton of experience last season. Now she is dripping with confidence and better understanding the SJV way. Last year she averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds. She also had 59 block shots. There is no reason to believe she will not have a massive jump in her stat sheet this coming season. She is a game changer because of the improvement on the offensive side of the ball. She will demand a double teams in the post. She is the key to everything for SJV.
STELLAR LOCKHART- JUNIOR- SWING
There is nothing she cannot do on the basketball court. She is one of the smartest players in the Shore Conference. She has a next level college body. She can post up or step away from the basket to shoot. She is an excellent passer and unselfish. She is an underrated defender, meanwhile she is one of the best rebounders in the entire state. She has multiple D1 offers and the school that signs her is getting not only talent but a hungry player was well. She will be in the All Shore First Team and All State hunt. Look for her to have a dominating season. She was SJV’s leading scorer last season. She averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds last season. Those numbers will rise dramatically this year
CHARLOTTE BRADLEY- JR – WING
Last year she moved into the starting lineup towards the end of the season. Bradley is a excellent shooter and heady player. She stays within herself and doesn’t make mistakes. She knows the SJV way and understands what it takes to win. She is underrated passer and defender. She’s strong and physical and much underrated rebounding guard. She could be a real shot in the arm for SJV. She had a very good statistical season based on her mins. She scored 100 points and had a shocking 60 assists, she is very confident. She could find herself in the starting lineup again
TATUM SHARPE- SOPHOMORE- WING
She is 6’0″ and long for days. She has made a massive improvement since last season and will make a major push to get into the starting lineup. She has improved in every area of her game. She has gotten stronger, her jump shot is more consistence, her handle and ability to go off the bounce is dangerous and she has become a true elite rebounding guard. She could be an elite stopper for Coach Karpell. She has multiple D1 offers on the table for a reason…she is going to be a problem this season. She got vaulable experince last year in 16 varsity games last year.
LISSY LYONS- SOPHOMORE- SWING
She is 5’10” and still growing. She will look to break into the rotation this season. She improved her three point shooting in a big way. She gotten noticeable stronger. She is excellent around the rim and an elite cutter without the ball. She can get on the glass and post up smaller players. She will give Coach Karpell a very versatile player off the bench with size and scoring ability. She saw action in 16 varsity games last year
AVERY BARTH- SOPHOMORE- COMBO
This rapidly developing guard is starting to show real flashes. Avery is a much improved shooter and ball handler vs pressure. She has the ability to play either the point or the two guard. She is a true transition type player because of her next level conditioning and speed . She is an excellent defender and brings lots of energy to the table. She is an evolving player who is beginning to look more and more like a typical SJV guard. Meaning she is developing into an impact player.
ADDISON BOGAN- SOPHOMORE- GUARD
She is a gym rat and dedicated. She also has put herself in position to become a player who will fit into the SJV culture. She is an excellent shooter and has had a serious upgrade in her ball handling skills. She can get to the rim and shoot the three. She has real quickness and the defensive possibilities are real. This is a player that can make a contribution.
BRYNN UTTER- SOPHOMORE- GUARD
She a big time athlete and can be a real asset to SJV when they want to press and run. She can knock down three’s and defend. She is a player the can add real speed and quickness to the lineup for Coach Karpell. She saw action in 14 games last season.
SJV has two future D1 freshman this season. Now how much they play only Coach Karpell knows. Both are among the best freshman not only in the Shore but the entire state as well. If the SJV guards struggle early. SJV has two future All Shore players to turn too.
GIANNA SANO – COMBO GUARD– She is a true scoring point guard, who loves to play the game. She is super quick and athletic. Her handle is deadly and she is shifty and creative. She is a handful in transition because of vision combined with the scoring ability. She is one of the best freshman in New Jersey.
ANTONIA JACKSON- COMBO GUARD– She is a grown woman with a grown women game. She is strong, powerful and can ball bully ball right now. She is explosive and quick. Her handle is as real as it gets and her passing skills are scary good. She is a reliable if not great shooter right now. She is a very good defender with a college body. She is one of the best Freshman in all of New Jersey.
SJV is going to pound the ball inside to Sofilkanich and play high low with Lockhart. Both will play inside or out. Dinker will handle the ball handling, point guard duties. But Madison Kocis is going to be motor that makes the SJV engine roll. She going score inside and out. Look for SJV to get out and run. Do not be surprise if SJV!s young freshman and Sophomores find themselves pressing and trapping.
This Question has to be answered by SJV. Can they go back to pressing a full game. They lack the quickness they have had pass years. What happens if Kocis is not knocking down three’s who shooting? How to do you replace Julia Karpell’s leadership and timely scoring in big spots? Who is replacing Daniella Matus’s 9 points a game? Finally, who moves in or out of the starting lineup and will everyone embrace their role?

Projected Division one players (1)
P5 Players-(0)
Gym Rat Count (1)
RBR has John Truhan on the sidelines and he fears no one and has the track record to prove it. JT is known for getting his teams to overachieve. RBR has what many consider the best half court offense in the Shore, which is loaded with back door cuts with room for three point shots for their shooters. They are not a deep experienced team but their returning 6 man rotation are battle tested and believe in there system. Coach Truhan, put another feather in his hat last year when RBR won the WOBM Holiday Tournament title. If RBC were to win a GROUP 3 title it would be have to throw throw Coach Trurhan into rare air. It would take the Bill Parcells of coaching to another level. This team is deeper than a year ago. They also are more experienced and have all the pieces to win a GROUP 3 STATE TITLE
CAMRYN GARDNER– 4 year starter, leading scorer and rebounder. She scored 230 points and 174 rebounds.
CAROLINE POLLOWAY- SENIOR – CENTER-
Caroline Pollaway, is a legit post player and one of the best in the Shore Conference. She is very capable of taking over a game. Her development over the years has been impressive. She turned down D1 offers to attend one of the best schools in America JOHN HOPKINS. Last season she was MVP of the prestigious WOBM CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. She was dominant at times last season on both sides of the ball. She had 227 points.. 200 rebounds and 50 blocks. She will give RBR a real presence in the lane and scoring on the block. She is a next level passer out of the post. She is a former All FRESHMAN TEAM MEMBER. She certainly has a state GROUP 3 title in mind
SYNAI BLYCHANTON- JUNIOR-POINT/COMBO
.She is one of most talented guards in the Shore conference. She is both explosives and competitive. She is without question the. Team leader of RBR. A big session from Synai could lead to RBR winning its first state title. She filled the stat sheet last season . 182 points … 86 rebounds and 76 assist
RILEY WHEELER- JUNIOR- COMBO
She will play all 3 guard positions and more importantly defend all three. She has had some big moments in her career. Now she is battle tested and expected to have a big year. Last season she had over 100 points and 40 assists. She is a deadly shooter, as she had 25 threes. Those numbers will no doubt increase this year.
ZOEY GULLEY- JUNIOR- GUARD
She has started since her freshman year. She is a three point shooting threat always. She is a capable rebounder and battle tested. She has had some massive scoring nights since her freshman year. Last year she scored 240 points… had 92 rebounds and 53 assists.
RILEY JOYCE- SENIOR- GUARD
She is a defensive stopper and one of the best defenders in the Shore Conference. She plays with an edge. She is an underrated passer and is a big pay maker and at times has shown an ability to create for herself. She had 10 threes last season. She is battle tested and highly competitive, she had 86 rebounds. She will most likely more into the starting lineup
KRISTEN CONNORS- JUNIOR- WING
She could have a break out season . She gives RBR a legit scorer. She is a deadly shoot from all spots on the floor. She will also give RBR some additional rebounding. Despite seeing spot mins, Kristen is very. confident. Spent the fall training and working on her game. She had 13 threes in 21 games last year. She will double that this season. There is no doubt a big season from her changes everything for RBR
RBR has two impact freshman. Both have an excellent chance of getting into the rotation.
BELLA JACKSON- GUARD she has something RBR needed badly. A bad ass who is seriously competitive and quite possibly the most underrated freshman in the class of 2028
CASEY MIRANDA–FORWARD at 6’1 she has a chance to be special. She is athletic and has real talent. She runs the floor like a deer and can finish at the rim. She has excellent hands and a strong body. She gives RBR a post player that can rest or play with Pollawell
This team with run the Princeton offense and shoots threes. They will be well coached and play excellent half court defense. SYNAI BLYCHANTON will run the offense and Pollawell will try to create double teams on the block for kick out threes or score. They will shoot threes in transition. But will slow it down when they don’t and run the best half court offense in the Shore Conference.
This team has many questions. None bigger than, can they finally handle full court pressure. In the past, Coach Truhan has tried everything. Including having his post players bring the ball up and inbound the ball to no avail. Next the RBR players rarely train or play in competitive environments out of season. So did anyone improve? How will they handle RBC and SJV? Can they be competitive?
Every year it seems we question RFH and every year Dave Callahan makes everyone eat there words. Last year RUMSON won 18 games and went 5-1 in B NORTH. This years team was hit hard by graduation. But there is talent left. RFH returns DIVISION ONE prospect, ERIN REID who last year as a Sophomore scored 277 points and had 206 rebounds to go along with 64 assists. She had big season. This year she could be All Shore, if she stays healthy.
Former 1st team ALL FRESHMAN member SYLVIE NOTINE returns for her last season before moving on to play Field Hockey at North Carolina. Notine, is super competitive and knows how to win. She is a seasoned guard and nothing will put her on her heels. She is a hard nose defender and the leader of the team. She made 30 threes last year and averaged just under 10 points a game with 3 rebounds and 3 assists from the guard spot.
BROOKE JAENICKE, returns for her sophomore year. She had some real impactful moments at times last year in a limited role. She has had a dynamic fall training period in preparation for this year. She is much improved and could make a case for the All Defensive team this year. She will move into the starting lineup. Grace Smith is another sophomore who had some impactful mins in limited time last year. She had a big summer in the Fort summer league. RFH, hopes she can build on that. She too will move into the starting lineup. Coach Callahan will need to do his best job to date if he hopes to make the SCT and make a little noise in the states.
Holmdel has Holy Cross signee MACKENZIE TEEVAN. She is one of the best post players in the state these days. She is a gym rat who appears to get better every day. She will try carry HOLMDEL into the SCT and make the states. Teevan will be surrounded by a group of talented freshman. CASEY ZAMMIT, will make a case for All Freshman and is a future D1 player herself. CLAIRE GILLESPIE Is a big talent and could be a nice surprise.
MIDDLETOWN SOUTH and TOM BRENNAN has some excellent young talent. But playing in this division is a bridge to far. Beating Holmdel is best South’s best chance to get a win in the Division
This is the division of death. RBR and COACH TRUHAN are dangerous because he has a reputation for pulling off major upsets. Just ask Manasquan and RBC. RFH has some talent but not enough. Holmdel and Middletown South are over their heads. That leaves RBC and SJV. But when all is equal, always turn to seniors. RBC has three… SJV has none.
