Last night,Mackenzie Teevan became the 11th player in Holmdel history to score 1000 points. But the real story is her journey to this milestone. It’s no so much the points but how she got here that is so unique. Mackenzie Teevan was not supposed to score 1000 points. In fact she was not expected to have a major impact on HOMDEL basketball. Yet here we are today calling her one of the best players in the state of New Jersey.
MACKENZIE TEEVAN was running track and playing volleyball as a freshman at Holmdel. Basketball was just something she did to fill in the time during the winter. There was no basketball training, film sessions or elite AAU competition. There was no thought of a free education at a D1 school. But all these things are now part of Mackenzie Teevan’s life now. That’s because she fell in love with a sport. She started dreaming and then she got very lucky. Her parents were not just supportive but encouraged her to work hard and do more than most. They never allowed her to take a short cut and they always let her know not only did they have her back. But that she could do big things. And that’s exactly what the future HOLY CROSS D1 player did.
Mackenzie Teevan only scored 70 points as a freshman. So really she has scored her thousand points in less than 3 years. In order to do that you need a coach that is willing to feature your game. A coach that is willing to build a team around your game. A coach who is demanding and holds you accountable.
Jessica Venturelli, has given the keys to the car to Mackenzie Teevan. She has put her in position to shine against the best of the very best players and teams. She has forced Teevan to get out of her comfort zone. She forced Mackenzie to be a leader and take ownership of her game and team. Jessica Venturelli, is more responsible for Mackenzie Teevan scoring her 1000 point more than anyone. That’s because not only did she give her a platform. She prepared her and made should she understood was expected. The two have make a great team.
It’s rare for a kid to get so serious about basketball so late in their career and accomplish so much. It shocking that Mackenzie Teevan is now part of a very rare club. It’s strange to know for the rest of her life, her name will hang in the rafters. She now becomes one of All time greats in Holmdel history. All these things have been earned through hard work and commitment to excellence. But none of it was expected 4 years ago. The strange thing about all this, is that Mackenzie Teevan has just touched the tip of her potential. There are more big things coming for her down the road. She has found the recipe for success, big successes. Her 1000th point last night just serves as a reminder to her GREATNESS … congratulations to Team MACKENZIE TEEVAN… well done
