EMILY WEIR… NO LONGER A SECRET!

One of the biggest reasons I love NBS is that it’s full of surprises. You never know who is going to walk though those doors. Sometimes it’s a player with no reputation or hype. Sometimes it’s a kid that travels for hours just to suck up the competition. Sometimes it’s a player you can’t wait to bring into the light. The name , EMILY WEIR may not mean a whole lot to you. But make no mistake the 2029 all purpose guard will mean a whole lot to D1 coaches real soon. That’s because she is clearly one of the best freshman on Long Island

St. Mary’s High School on Long Island may not be well known by those in New Jersey. I know very little about the school. I have no idea if D1 coaches know much about the school or its basketball program. Here in the Shore we live in the world of sharks and killers. We don’t worry much about the outside world. Well there is a shark swimming around Long Island. Emily Weir is not just talented. She has all the skills sets that few great players are blessed with at such an early age. “RED” as I like to call her is that rare freshman ready to play right out the gate. That’s because her basketball IQ is off the charts. She is a dynamic passer and plays without the ball as well as any player you know. Her ability to to score at all three levels is impressive. If EMILY WEIR, was in the shore conference, she’d have a case as the best freshman in the conference. Let me correct myself, one of the best freshman in the entire state. She is that good. She plays that hard and her competitive nature is on full display the moment she sets foot in the gym.

I really don’t know what is EMILY WEIR’S best position. That’s because “RED” is so versatile. We love calling kids versatile. Truth of the matter is very few are versatile at all. But Emily can play almost any role on the floor. She can be a point forward, shooting guard or even a stretch four. She is not a player pretending to play these positions, then will get to college and play one position. EMILY can play multiple positions and impact the game. EMILY can do it all and she makes it look so nature. It’s clear she has been coached up and understands the nuances of the game. When you see her handle the ball, you notice her head is in a swivel and she protects the ball as if the nuclear code were at stake. Her respect for the ball is mind blowing for such a young player.

There are talented young players who get crowned and glazed up at an early age. We see it all the time. It’s an age old story. The kid stops developing, their peers catch up physically and the next thing you know. Everyone is talking about what could have been. Emily, has no worries regarding this, she just a kid who likes our game. She doesn’t play for hype or personal attention. She is quiet and unassuming., that is until she gets on the court and then her game gets loud, real loud. Like when she was matched up with a very talented freshman in the Shore and she took her to the woodshed. It was a painful reminder to that future star. Never assume anything especially when it comes to “RED” . She is a very dangerous young lady, the quiet ones always are!

It’s a 90 min ride one way for EMILY every weekend.Yet she shows up every Saturday and Sunday at NBS. It goes to her dedication. It’s not easy to walk into a gym where you don’t know anyone. It hard to show up and the coaches don’t know your name or your game. Even if you were ALL COUNTY AS A 8th grader. But that has all changed these days. Everyone will soon know the name EMILY WEIR. When she told me she was just a freshman my jaw dropped in disbelief. Well when D1 college coaches start to discover EMILY aka “RED” they not going to be surprised. But rather begging for her signature. The only advice I can give to EMILY WEIR is this, she’d be wise to invest in a good pair of sunglasses. Because she is going to need them… because her FUTURE IS OLE SO BRIGHT!
