LABOR DAY IS THE STARTING LINE…IT IS WHERE TRUTH WILL BEGAN
Tomorrow is Labor Day.
Tomorrow, like I do every year, I will run our Labor Clinic. Most people will look at tomorrow as just another day. Another holiday. Another day off. But to me, and to the players who truly want to have a great basketball season, Labor Day is much more than that.
Labor Day is a signal.
Whether a player knows it or not, tomorrow marks the beginning of a new journey. It is the day a player has to take an honest look at their game. What am I good at? What do I need to improve? What is holding me back? And most importantly: Put the summer behind them and accept truth in their game. Some players with thought were special were not. Some with thought were not special we found out are very special indeed. But none of that matters anymore.
Every player will make a decision. Some will choose highly competitive training environments where they are challenged every day. Some will choose environments filled with friends and teammates because they are comfortable there. Some will choose weaker environments where they can feel like the best player in the gym. Some will choose places where everyone knows their name. None of those decisions are mine to make.
They belong to the player.
Labor Day is a signal.

What am I good at?
What do I need to improve?
What is holding me back?
And most importantly:
How badly do I really want this?
Because the calendar is changing. Open gyms are around the corner. Fall training is underway. Teams are beginning to take shape. Players are beginning to understand where they fit—and where they might not. Recruiting becomes real. Competition becomes real. Playing time becomes real. And suddenly, there isn’t much room left for excuses. Every player will make a decision. Some will choose highly competitive training environments where they are challenged every day. Some will choose environments filled with friends and teammates because they are comfortable there. Some will choose weaker environments where they can feel like the best player in the gym. None of those decisions are mine to make.
They belong to the player.
But eventually, the results will belong to the player, too. Labor Day is when kids with real dreams start doing the hard stuff.
They train when nobody is watching.
They get in the weight room.
They watch film.
They work on the parts of their game they don’t like.
They ask for hard coaching.
They find coaches who aren’t afraid to challenge them, correct them and squeeze every ounce of talent out of them. Because there is a difference between a dream and a fantasy.
A fantasy is something you think about.
A dream is something you fight for.
A fantasy comes and goes.
A dream requires you to show up every day.
And Labor Day is where that difference starts becoming visible. This is also the time when players begin taking stock of the competition. Who got better? Who didn’t? Who is coming for my spot? Where am I going to get my minutes? Is my team going to reach its expectations? Am I ready for the level of competition I say I want? There shouldn’t be much misunderstanding about what is coming. The next 12 weeks are going to tell us a lot. Some players will try to live off their reputation. Some will rely on hype. Some will believe everything will simply work itself out. And then there will be the players who understand something very important:
The moment has arrived.
There are consequences to waiting. There are consequences to doing less. There are consequences to choosing comfort over competition. But there are also incredible possibilities for the player who gets serious right now. That’s what tomorrow represents .
Not fear.
Not hype.
Not pressure.
Possibility.
The possibility that a kid can walk into the gym tomorrow as one player and walk out beginning the process of becoming something completely different.
The possibility that the next 12 weeks can change a season. Maybe even change a career. So tomorrow, when everybody else sees Labor Day as a holiday, I’ll see something different. I’ll see the starting line. Because basketball doesn’t care what you did last year. It doesn’t care what somebody said about you. It doesn’t care how much hype you received. It only asks one question:
